RIDING WITH A PURPOSE.

Empowering youth through equine therapy, one step at a time.

PELIA Equine is dedicated to empowering at-risk youth through equine therapy, offering a unique opportunity to connect with horses in a safe, supportive environment. Based in Danville, Ohio, the program uses horses and horsemanship skills to teach responsibility, build self-confidence, and promote emotional healing. By fostering meaningful relationships between youth and horses, PELIA aims to inspire personal growth and resilience in young people facing life's challenges.

Our story

Our History

In March 2021, PEIA Equine Programs began a transformative journey, repurposing the Red Barn into its headquarters to serve as a hub for equine therapy and educational initiatives. This collaborative effort laid the foundation for a growing nonprofit committed to fostering personal growth, healing, and learning through the unique connection between people and horses.

The barn renovation was a community-driven project that included the addition of living quarters with bedrooms, a bathroom, a laundry and storage area, a kitchen, and a living room. Under adult supervision, students actively participated in demolition and construction, turning the project into both a functional upgrade and a valuable learning experience.

An outdoor arena, constructed with the help of former therapy participants and 4H members, now enhances the property. Additionally, an indoor arena, currently 80% complete thanks to volunteers and community contributions, is a testament to PELiA’s ongoing growth. This facility will feature stalls, aisleways, and an observation platform overlooking the recreation room, ensuring year-round programming.

Program Expansion

Since its inception, PELIA Equine has broadened its impact by partnering with organizations such as Knox County Juvenile Probation, Behavioral Health Partners (BHP), the Knox County Board of Developmental Disabilities (DD), and local homeschool networks. Today, the therapy program supports a wide range of initiatives, including:

Equine therapy for local schools students

A dedicated homeschool program

A sponsored 4H club

An after-school tutoring initiative

Community service projects in collaboration with Knox County Juvenile Courts

Teen retreats and summer camp programs

Weekly equine therapy sessions began with 13 students and have since expanded to accommodate more participants. Divided into groups by age, students engage in barn projects, therapeutic activities, horsemanship training, and scenic trail rides. These efforts have delivered tangible results, including reduced office referrals and improved standardized testing scores.

Our Facilities

PELiA’s facilities are designed to inspire learning and foster growth. The barn’s upper level features a recreation room complete with a rock wall, a cozy loft with a reading library, and a "Share Shack" for resource exchange. The lower level includes a feed room, classroom, two tack rooms, a workshop, and farm equipment and materials storage.

Sustaining Our Mission

Since becoming a nonprofit in 2021, PELIA Equine has relied on donations, volunteers, and small grants to sustain its programs. The community’s generous support has been instrumental in ensuring PELIA Equine continues to empower individuals and enrich lives through equine therapy, education, and community engagement.

Great experience for our teenage girls -- staff and horses were great. Fun trail, reasonably priced and easy to find on Wally Rd. -Jakie H

The trail guides are friendly, the horses are well mannered and kind to even the most beginner riders. Wonderful experience. I feel great that the cost of our experience helps to support their at-risk-youth equine Therapy programs. Ask about it, amazing program started by a horse women and a compassionate special ed. teacher. -Sandy P

This is a great place to learn and get experience with horses and farm life. The trail rides are phenomenal and relaxing. They do a great job with their classes and summer camps also.-Ann Y

We were in the area for a few days and popped in on one of the hottest days of the year just to learn about this place. The lady we spoke to obviously loved her job, told us tons about the horses and what the folks there do, and answered all our questions. This is definitely a business I'd recommend. -Bonnie F
